Finally got out on the Wekiwa River again a few weekends ago. I had only been on this river twice before. One launch was from the Wekiwa KOA Camp Ground, this past one was from the State Park. I definitely prefer the State Park launch. It seems the river down my the KOA is a lot wider and there were fewer things to see. During this last trip, we saw probably a half dozen alligators, all sorts of birds, there were little side ways that we could explore. It was a lovely day all around but the river was pretty busy. In the future we would probably head out earlier (we got out at about 10:15am). I know once school starts it’ll be less crowded too.
It’s not my favorite river i’ve been on. I loved the Weeki Wachee river the most so far but mainly because of the manatees I also liked the Big and Little Manatee Rivers but mainly because they are so crystal clear. The rivers here in Central Florida are a bit murky, I don’t feel super comfortable jumping in them. It makes bathrooming and cooling off a bit of a hassle.
Don’t have many pics. I’ll take more when we do St. Johns.
We Tandem kayak’d btw without incident. Anyone who’s been on the river knows that tandem ANYTHING has the potential for a meltdown. Especially canoeing. We did see plenty of canoe families screaming at each other though.
